Candidate statement

As published on the candidate's Law Society of Alberta election profile.

I came to Canada as an immigrant. The experience from my home country has given me a deep appreciation for the rule of law and the separation of powers. I know what it’s like to live in a country where those principles don’t exist. I understand the need for an independent legal profession and the rule of law.

My connection to Alberta began when I visited my brother while he was studying at the University of Calgary. I was drawn to the community Albertans have worked hard to build. I decided to build my life here. I articled in Fort McMurray. Then, opened my practice in Calgary. Today, I am raising my two-year-old son in the province I call home.

I founded my practice, Ansari Immigration Law (AIL), to help people who, like me, have made Canada their home. I have built AIL into a modern immigration law firm. We have integrated artificial intelligence and technology throughout our work to improve client service, without increasing costs. Building and running AIL has given me firsthand experience with building tech efficiencies, team leadership and the practical realities of being regulated by the Law Society.

Through founding my firm and watching friends do the same, I have learned that protecting the public and strengthening the profession go hand in hand. A strong legal profession requires investment in the people who practise within it – in their competence, resilience, and ability to adapt to a shifting landscape.

In my practice, I have established myself as a thought leader in the immigration space. I am regularly invited by Canadian legal organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association, to lecture on topical issues. At a time when immigration is one of the key questions facing Canada and Alberta, it is key to have a Bencher immersed in the immigration landscape.

Being a thought leader has required me to step into difficult conversations. I have weighed in on issues of national and international importance through the media. I am not intimidated by doing the right thing, even if it isn’t the easy path.

Outside my practice, I have served on boards, including at the University of Toronto and the Centre of Hope in Fort McMurray. I also co-founded a nonprofit legal organization that reunites Canadians with their displaced family members. Due to my governance experience, I know how to balance large budgets, juggle competing demands, and build effective organizations. In 2026, Canadian Lawyer Magazine recognized my contributions to the profession by naming me one of Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers.

I am seeking to serve as a Bencher because I care deeply about my home province and the institutions that uphold the rule of law. I bring the perspective of an immigrant, law firm founder, and board member who has built her career and family in our beautiful province.
